Holmer and Friends Tower Outing - Saturday 21st  June 2014     More photos

We all met at Holmer church for an 8.15am departure. Everyone arrived promptly and we were soon off to St Giles, Chetton a ground floor ring, where we rang Little Bob and Plain Hunt. These bells gave a lovely sound out into the countryside, in the bright sunshine.

From here it was on to Bridgnorth, St Mary’s. We had a chauffeur to the door of the church; just as well otherwise we would have had 200 steps to climb from the lower to the upper town. After a successful ring, including Grandsire triples, we left the church by the side door as a wedding party was arriving. Luckily for them, they had free bells for their arrival. The sun still beating down we made our way to the Cliff Railway for a gentle ride down to the lower town.  Built in 1892 the 201ft track drops 111ft in just over 1 minute; a perfect descent to the lower town for lunch and refreshments.

The Bamboo Wine Bar was the perfect break for us to lunch together. Some members of the group could not resist a quick visit to the ice cream parlour next door for extras. After a leisurely lunch it was back in the minibus and back to the country churches.

The staircase at Alveley, St Mary’s gave a few people a bit of trouble, being an open metal spiral, but the climb was worth it for a ring. We achieved Stedman & Plain Bob doubles.

Our last ring was at the spacious tower in St Peter’s, Upper Arley, where much interest was taken in the peal boards around.  We completed our day with some Plain & little Bob and Cambridge.

We returned to our minibus to persuade the driver that one more thirst quenching drink would complete a perfect day out in such hot weather. Having found a pub turned Farm shop and café we enjoyed a pint out in the garden in the sunshine.

We arrived back in Holmer after a wonderful day out.

Thanks to Karen and Dave for organising the day and a big thank you to Dave for driving the whole day in the heat without beer, although a few bottles were bought at the farm shop!
